Making music together and on your own

The Twin Kalimba was designed for playing music together. Both sides of the thumb piano feature sets of tongues tuned to the same pitch. This allows you to play the kalimba both on your own and with a second person. This creates a particularly resonant sound rich in overtones, as the opposite tongue resonates with every note played.

The Twin Kalimba can be played both solo and with a second person—discover its harmonic possibilities through free improvisation.

Area of Application and Benefits

The Twin Kalimba can be played both together and alone. Use it for group music-making, sound work, educational applications, or therapeutic settings. When playing together, two people sit facing each other, each playing a set of tongues. The instrument is played simply with the thumbs by gently pressing the metal tongues down and releasing them. When playing the Twin Kalimba alone, hold it horizontally in both hands and play both sets of tongues simultaneously, using one thumb for each.

Sound

Whether you play the Twin Kalimba alone or with a partner, the identically tuned scales always produce harmonious sequences of notes. The sound is particularly rich in overtones and resonant because the opposite tongue vibrates in unison with every note played. The resulting sounds blend into a shared sonic space that is not only audible but also palpable.
