Peter Hess – Pioneer of Sound Work
Inspired by the healing power of sounds that Peter Hess experienced during his travels to Nepal, he founded the sound massage with Singing Bowls in 1984. In 1989, together with his then-wife Jozina Hess-de Korte, he began to produce his own Singing Bowls, which they subjected to the highest quality criteria.
Our own Singing Bowls
From the beginning, it was important to Peter Hess in the production of new Singing Bowls to combine tradition with modernity, to create fair working conditions on site and to support his second adopted home, Nepal. This remains a central concern of Peter Hess® Singing Bowl production to this day. With his work, Peter Hess has positively influenced the lives of many people and written a success story: his sound methods are gaining recognition in various fields of work from wellness and prevention to education and counseling, to therapy and healing.
Peter Hess® Institute
At the Peter Hess® Institute, in the Peter Hess® seminar centers, and at the now more than 20 Peter Hess® Academies abroad, people can receive training in sound work.
Jana Hess – Management in the second generation
The distribution of the high-quality Peter Hess® Singing Bowls is now managed in the second generation by daughter Jana Hess. She has been jointly responsible for the sale of Singing Bowls, gongs and many other products for sound massage and working with sound at Hess Sound for over 20 years. In 2018, she took over the company from her mother, Jozina Hess-de Korte. Hess Sound advises and supplies people interested in sound worldwide.
Since childhood, Jana Hess has been closely connected to the family business, accompanying her father to trade fairs and sound massage seminars from an early age. During her design studies, she gained further creative inspiration. The company continues to benefit from her fresh, modern approaches.
"We are constantly evolving and have many ideas that we want to implement gradually. Our products are becoming increasingly sustainable. We put a lot of thought into this and are happy about new ideas! The team is growing, and we love our connection to sound people in Germany, Europe, and the rest of the world."
Jana Hess
In addition to sales, the Hess Sound team organizes the SommerKlangEvent (June/July) and the Open House Days (November) every year. With their many free workshops, discounts on Singing Bowls and more, both events have become special highlights. Hess Sound, together with the Peter Hess® Institute, can also be found with a stand at numerous trade fairs in the fields of therapy, education, lifestyle, beauty and SPA. There, interested parties can try out Singing Bowls and enjoy free short sound massages.
Fair working conditions
Many of our products, such as Singing Bowls and gongs, are manufactured in their countries of origin: Nepal, India and China. In doing so, we pay particular attention to good working conditions during production. Among other things, it is important to us that
- a fair salary is paid
- no children work in the workshops
- we provide financial support to the artisans in case of illness and weddings.
In addition, we try to have as many products as possible, such as mallets and other accessories, manufactured in Germany.
Sustainability
In addition to the longevity of our products, we are working to consume as few resources as possible. It is a matter close to our hearts to completely avoid plastic in the long term. We are trying to increasingly anchor sustainability in every one of our company's actions.
For our products, we try to use natural and renewable raw materials whenever possible. We are also expanding our range to include vegan products. With online retail, a lot of packaging material is generated. That's why we've given this particular thought and are still looking for ecological alternatives and ways to reduce it.
Reuse of packaging material
The packaging material is mostly reused or recycled, e.g., we use cushion pads made of shredded old, unusable cardboard boxes.
Avoiding plastic in shipping
We avoid plastic as much as possible when shipping. We continue to use the plastic bags that we need for transport from production so that the goods are protected from salt water and corrosion during shipment by sea.
In our shipping department, we use paper tape instead of plastic tape, as well as paper padding and packaging flakes made of starch.
Reducing paper through digitization
We are also gradually switching to digital media. Our catalog can be viewed and downloaded online and is only sent in printed form upon request. Whenever possible, we have printed materials printed climate-neutrally and on recycled paper in Germany.
Social commitment
We support the association CHANCEN – Bildung in Nepal (OPPORTUNITIES – Education in Nepal). The aim of the association is to promote charitable purposes and development cooperation in Nepal, with a focus on education and youth welfare. In cooperation with the non-profit organization "Boris Hess Foundation" in Bhaktapur, which was named after Jana's brother Boris, who died in 2013, and other non-profit organizations in Nepal, the aim is to provide underprivileged children with free education, accommodation, food and adequate health care.
