Tam-tam gongs and feng gongs differ primarily in their construction, tonal character, and areas of use. Both belong to the group of flat gongs. 

A Feng Gong made of thinner metal and has no rim, or only a narrow, slightly raised one. This produces an open, slowly building sound with a broad spectrum of overtones. Tam-tam gongs have a distinctly flared rim. This design produces a denser, more powerful, and longer-lasting sound with a pronounced sustain.

Where does the Gong come from?

The gong is an instrument that originated in Southeast Asia and is one of the oldest known musical instruments in the region. Although its exact origin is not entirely clear, the historical centers of gong culture are considered to include, among others, present-day Myanmar (Burma), China, Vietnam (Annam), and Java.

From a musicological perspective, gongs are classified as metal idiophones—that is, musical instruments whose sound is produced by the vibration of the metal itself. In Southeast Asia, they are among the oldest and most important musical instruments.

The so-called “kettle drums,” bronze kettle drums, are recognized as the precursors of gongs. From these, various types of gongs developed, such as the feng and tam-tam gongs, which spread to Japan over the centuries via the Silk Road.
