Mallets for Gongs

The desired sound, the area of use as well as the size and type of your gong determine which mallet is right for your gong. As a rough guide: smaller gongs are usually played with lighter and smaller gong mallets, while larger and heavier gong mallets are used on larger gongs. If you use a mallet that is too large on a small gong, it overstimulates your gong. Conversely, a mallet that is too small can make your gong sound metallic. A mallet for a gong is called either a gong beater or a gong mallet. Gong mallets are available in different sizes, weights, materials and degrees of hardness. They are used, among other things, to strike TamTam Gongs, Feng Gongs and Nickel Silver Gongs. Which mallet is suitable for your gong depends in particular on the size and type of the gong, the area of use and the desired sound.

With different gong mallets, you can bring out different frequencies and timbres of your gong. Soft and larger mallets tend to produce a warmer, fuller and deeper sound. Smaller or harder mallets address the gong more directly and bring out higher frequencies and overtones more strongly. Weight, the materials used, the design and the striking technique also influence how the sound develops.

Gong mallets come in different materials, sizes and degrees of hardness. Fleece or plush mallets usually have a natural rubber or rubber core. These mallets are suitable for soft to powerful strikes on your gong. Depending on the design, different timbres are possible: from deep and spherical to very direct and high sounds.

Besides gong mallets, there are also special friction mallets for gongs made of rubber or natural rubber. These are guided over the surface of the gong and produce long-lasting, singing sounds.

With a gong mallet, the gong is struck and then vibrates freely. This creates powerful, sweeping and voluminous tones. A friction mallet, on the other hand, is guided over the surface of the gong with even pressure. This creates long-lasting, mystical sounds that are often reminiscent of whale songs. Depending on the friction mallet and playing technique, you can emphasize different frequencies. Some rubber mallets can be used both for striking and for rubbing the gong.
