Mallets for gongs

The sound of a gong depends on its size, hardness, and surface texture, as well as the gong mallet or friction mallet used. To achieve a wide variety of sounds when working with gongs, different types of gong mallets and gong friction mallets have been developed. You can choose between felt mallets, plush mallets and rubber mallets. The latter are also suitable for rubbing the gong, creating a sound reminiscent of whale song.

Which gong mallet is right for my gong?

The desired sound, the intended use, and the size and type of your gong determine which mallet is right for your gong. As a general guideline: Smaller gongs are usually played with lighter and smaller gong mallets, while larger gongs require correspondingly larger and heavier gong mallets. If you use a mallet that’s too large on a small gong, it will overstimulate your gong. Conversely, a mallet that’s too small can make your gong sound metallic. In our product descriptions, you’ll find recommendations on which gong mallet is suitable for which gong size.

What is the name of the mallet used to strike a gong?

A mallet for a gong is referred to as either a gong mallet or a gong stick. Gong mallets are available in a variety of sizes, weights, materials, and degrees of hardness. Among other things, they are used to play TamTam gongs, Feng gongs, and nickel-silver gongs ( strike ). Which mallet is suitable for your gong depends primarily on the size and type of the gong, its intended use, and the desired sound.

How does a gong mallet affect the sound?

By using different gong mallets, you can bring out various frequencies and timbres in your gong. Softer and larger mallets tend to produce a warmer, fuller, and deeper sound. Smaller or harder mallets strike the gong more directly and bring out higher frequencies and overtones more prominently. Weight, the materials used, the design, and the striking technique also influence the sound produced.

What kinds of gong mallets are there?

Gong mallets come in a variety of materials, sizes, and degrees of hardness. Fleece or plush mallets usually have a natural rubber or synthetic rubber core. These mallets are suitable for soft to powerful strikes on your gong. Depending on the design, they can produce a range of timbres: from deep and ethereal to very direct and bright sounds.

In addition to gong mallets, there are also special gong scrapers made of rubber or natural rubber. These are drawn across the surface of the gong, producing long-lasting, singing tones.

What is the difference between a gong mallet and a friction mallet?

The gong is struck with a gong mallet and then allowed to ring out freely. This produces powerful, resonant, and full-bodied tones. A gong scraper, on the other hand, is moved across the surface of the gong with even pressure. This produces long-lasting, mystical sounds that are often reminiscent of whale songs. Depending on the scraper and playing technique, you can emphasize different frequencies. Some rubber mallets can be used for both striking the gong ( strike ) and scraping it.
